How do you choose good Xmas presents?

Ok guys, it's that time of year again, and I am once again faced with the dillemma of purchasing siutable gifts for my family.
But how do I go about this? I enter a shop and am bombarded with choices, ah what to do? Poor me.
Any tips?

I just look at what the person likes. Even if it's something as simple as a color, that can still get you somewhere. If you have a good idea of their tastes, that's even better. For instance, someone who knows me would probably get me at least one thing comic book-related.
